Upgrade Complete!
As expected, that was somewhat painful upgrading my K2 installation. Again, not due to the K2 developers but due to my customizations. In fact, the latest K2 makes things much easier to do, particularly with the sidebar modules. So I had to convert all my custom code into the modules, which was fairly straightforward. I then upgraded all my plugins to the latest versions to work their best with Wordpress 2.1.x. Finally, I had to go back in to the K2 “theloop” and customize some things like my views, ratings, and printing functions.
So in the end, like many others I would guess, I still ended up with custom code following me around.
You’ll also notice that my theme, or rather my K2 style, has changed slightly. That’s because of another issue I ran into with my older style for K2, which was called graphite. I really liked the simplicity and cleanness of the look, but I had some problems with it at first. And in trying to work through those issues I found that the original author’s site is either down temporarily or completely gone. So I looked to K2’s Styles and Mods page and found this current style, called Sapphire. I like it for the most part, although the dark black around the edges took me some time to get used to. I may dig into the CSS and change that to a lighter grey or bluish color at some point.
Finally getting my site upgraded to the most recent versions of all this code has been fun and painful all at the same time, but I’m glad to look back on it and see it completed now. I’m sure I’ll be touching up pieces here and there in the coming days and weeks though.
I did notice that with all the upgrades, that my smileys and pictures are now inline to my text by default. I’m not sure I like that, as it really whacks out the spacing and placement in Internet Exploder. Firefox renders it better, but still not ideal. I’ll have to look into that - not sure if it’s the Wordpress upgrade, the K2 upgrade, the style I’m using or some combination. Guess if I was documenting this process properly I would have know the answer to that! But I’m not at the office or working for a client, so I sometimes get a little lazy about my own stuff.
